Every month at Walters People, we put a popular job in the spotlight.

This month, Kevin Blockx, Senior Manager, focuses on General Ledger Accountant, an essential role in the finance department of an organisation offering great salary evolutions.

What are the main responsibilities of a General Ledger Accountant?

Kevin: "A General Ledger Accountant is responsible for coding invoices and handling payments to customers and suppliers. He is responsible for the monthly declarations such as forecasting and corrections at the end of the month. In addition, he is also in charge of the annual tax return and the completion of the VAT return."

Is there a high demand for General Ledger Accountants?

"Yes, definitely. Organisations are particularly interested in General Ledger Accountants with two to three years of experience. We see that there are currently even more vacancies than available candidates on the labour market, so there is definitely a certain scarcity on the market".

According to Jobfeed's data, we do indeed see a 54% increase in demand between the first and second quarter of 2019. Majority of the General Ledger Accountant jobs is located mainly in Wallonia. If we compare job adverts from November 2018 to November 2019 with those from the same period in 2017 to 2018, we see that the demand was rather constant.

What are the main qualities of a General Ledger Accountant?

"A successful GL Accountant must be very strict and be able to see the link between various coding operations. He must really understand them in order to be able to execute them correctly. A General Ledger Accountant must also be curious about the particularities of the organisation he works for. After all, each sector has its own specific characteristics. In addition, it is also required to be able to handle confidential information easily, since a General Ledger Accountant has access to a great deal of information, such as the salaries of everyone within the company. Finally, a solid language knowledge is an enormous advantage, as Accountants are in regular contact with customers and suppliers."

What is the average salary of a General Ledger Accountant?

“According to our most recent salary survey, a Junior General Ledger Accountant with less than three years of experience earns between 2200 and 2600 EUR gross per month. A professional with three to six years of experience earns on average between 2500 and 3300 EUR gross per month. A Senior General Ledger Accountant with more than six years of experience can count on an average gross monthly salary between 3000 and 3800 EUR.

"Junior General Ledger Accountants therefore have good prospects in terms of salary development."

What does the future of the General Ledger Accountant look like?

"The coding of various operations will be more and more automated. This automation will make it possible for General Ledger Accountants to focus more on technical tasks and projects. This means that organisations will increasingly look for accountants with a good technical knowledge."
